The Tom Mac Group — Live at Hard Rock Cafe, Rockford

What do you get when you cross a James Taylor and Pat Metheny fanatic on acoustic guitar; a Phish and Grateful Dead worshipper on electric lead; a jazz rebel on upright bass; a Steve Gadd celebrant on drums; two backup vocalists who adore Beethoven and show tunes; and an opera singer with a four-scale vocal range on lead vocals?

You get the diverse and talented Tom Mac Group.

The goal of this six-piece band is to make the hair on the back of the listener’s neck stand up. Expect passionate musical expressions, precise three-part harmonies, unexpected twists and turns of well-known compositions, soaring guitar solos (a fire extinguisher is at hand in case of spontaneous combustion), heart-wrenching arrangements, flatted ninths where there should be none, and, at times, the subtle playing of diminished, augmented, and suspended chords.

As put more eloquently by Leonard Cohen — “the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, and the major lift.”

Back from a bit of a hiatus, the group’s fresh lineup showcases creative arrangements spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Although the members take their art seriously, they don’t take themselves too seriously. They are not a glum lot — they insist on enjoying life as it presents itself on stage.

If the audience can’t see joy or fun in the performance, there’s no reason to perform. The band believes that music is the language of the heart — and this heart is well-tuned, beating with a passion ready to envelop all in its path.

Get your body, spirit, and mind ready for a great musical experience.
